It’s the BAFTAs on Sunday! So I thought a quick post with some pointers (and shiny pics) was in order.
Red Carpet
Benedict has been confirmed as attending which means that if you want photos/autographs then really the best chance of obtaining them is to watch the red carpet arrivals on the day. Access to the red carpet is by wristband only. Wristbands are given out from the public queuing area on the Festival Terrace from 8am on Sunday 27 May. People will obviously queue before then so it is an early start if you want a decent spot. Bear in mind Benedict hasn’t been in the country for the best part of 5 months so I am anticipating he will spend a lot of time chatting to the press. Apart from Benedict others representing Team Sherlock and confirmed to be attending on the night are Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue, Andrew Scott and Lara Pulver. I am sure Mark Gatiss will also be there. Sadly Martin is filming The Hobbit and so can’t attend but his partner Amanda Abbington will be there.
Attending the Ceremony
If you’ve got a ticket for the ceremony have an amazing time walking the red white and blue carpet!
The red carpet opens at 4:30 p.m. and they want everyone to have arrived by 5:30 p.m. with the ceremony starting at 6:45 p.m. Put your glad rags on, celeb spot and rub shoulders with the shiny celebs around you at the (sadly) cash bar. Oh and dress light - there’s going to 1500 people arriving and cramming into that foyer apparently! I think there is a fair Sherlock contingent in attendance. Do say hi if you spot me amongst the throngs of people.
Coverage on the Night
I will do my best to take some pics of the crowds & the like in the build up on the night (although I wouldn’t expect any posed pics of the celebs - I think you’ll get turfed out for that!).
The BBC in its infinite wisdom is once again not screening the BAFTAs live. The ceremony starts at 6:45 - the tv coverage starts at 8:00 p.m. on BBC 1. This means that if you want to watch the TV coverage and not be spoiled do stay off twitter (and tumblr!) as twitter will announce all the results first on the night. I won’t be live tweeting as such but will tweet the Sherlock categories as they come up.
Benedict and Andrew Scott are the favourites to win in their categories but then Benedict was heavily favoured to win last year so who knows? Award shows do often award people for their body of work & this is Benedict’s 4th nomination but Dominic West is a serious competitor. It’s widely feared that Celeb Juice will do a TOWIE and whaltz off with the Audience Vote Award which would be a travesty. If (god forbid) the evening doesn’t go as we all hope let’s try, as hard as it may be, to react in a way which would do Team Sherlock proud.
BAFTA aren’t streaming the event so the only place you can see the awards is on BBC1 but they will be posting video highlights to their website during the course of the evening.
Whether you’re doing the red carpet, attending or watching at home have a fab time and good luck Team Sherlock!
Sherlock on the front cover of WETA Television Magazine
Happy #Sherlockpbs day!
To all the lovely people in the US do enjoy the transmission of Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia and afterwards you can check out our review of the episode (non spoilery and spoiler filled).
#Sherlock is getting amazing reviews in the US and an up to date list of reviews has been added to my site.
This…is profoundly disappointing news. Not conclusive but certainly a good indicator that we all need to vote. So please do everything you can. Vote from multiple devices, nip into your local apple store nag your parents/siblings/friends to vote.
Sherlock is hugely popular but that doesnt always translate to polls like this which tend to be won by the show that is pimped the most by celebs and which has the most savvy on-line fanbase.
So we need to be that fanbase. I have no issue with the likes of Educating Essex or the cute penguins winning but for Celebrity Juice to win would be a bit of an insult.
If the hits to the BAFTA video clips are anything to go by (and they were last year) then Celebrity Juice is beating Sherlock in the BAFTA Audience Award. As Celebrity Juice is unlikely to have non UK interest its more likely that the hits are translating into votes.
A number of Sherlock’s hits are likely to be people outside of the UK who love the show who dont realise initially that they can’t vote until after they watch the video clip that accompanies it.
There are a few events coming up to promote the airing of Sherlock on Masterpiece PBS in the US (from 6 May).
On 28th April SoCal PBS is holding a sneak peek of Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia at the Art Theatre of Long Beach. Sign up for tickets here and arrive early on the day.
On 1st May at 6:30 p.m. in Rochester New York WXXI is screening The Great Game followed by a sneak peak at Sherlock series 2 at the Little Theatre. It’s a free event and seating is first come first served (always brilliant to see Sherlock on the big screen).
On 2nd May PBS are holding the New York event with Benedict Cumberbatch, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue in attendance (and in response to the 213 (yes count them) e-mails I have received no I don’t know where this is being held!)
There will be a Q&A, excerpt screening of Scandal and autograph reception. Tickets are by random draw with 200 available. Today is the last day to get entries in (1 entry per household multiples will be deleted). Send e-mails to sherlock@pbs.org and ibelieveinsherlock@pbs.org to enter.
on 5th May Rocky Mountain PBS in Denver is doing a Sherlock Holmes Scavenger Hunt and sneak peek screening.
The wording of the events suggests that the full episode of Scandal won’t be played at any of them - just excerpt screenings and sneak peeks but it all sounds like a lot of fun!
Thanks to Gay for telling me about the Denver event and Teresa for alerting me to The Great Game screening.
The nominations for the BAFTA Craft Awards will be announced later today (16th April). For reasons that sort of pass me by the categories that you would expect to be featured in the main BAFTA ceremony (directing, writing, music, editing etc) are all featured in the Craft Awards instead.
So all appendages crossed that later today we will be sending congratulations to Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, Paul McGuigan, Charlie Phillips, David Arnold and Michael Price for their nominations.
Nominations for the main awards (including all the acting categories) are announced on 24 April.
Been a while since I did one of those so here’s where you can see Benedict & his co-stars in the coming weeks:
Benedict Cumberbatch
Currently in LA filming the Star Trek sequel. After Star Trek he is due to film the independent movie Phoenix with Liv Tyler.
He can currently be heard in the Google + advert (which launched today) reading The Seven Ages of Man.
Sherlock series 2, Wreckers and Fortysomething are now available to buy and War Horse (in which Benedict plays Major Stewart) is due for release on dvd in the US next week.
Benedict has been nominated for an Olivier Award and tickets to the ceremony (on 15th April) are now on sale to Mastercard holders for £90. Please note there is no guarantee Benedict will attend although certainly it is hoped he will.
Tickets are also on sale to this years BAFTA TV Awards on 28th May at the Southbank Centre. Balcony tickets cost £28. Not many seats left so do snap one up quickly if you’re thinking of attending.
NT Live will be doing encore screenings of Frankenstein in June. Do check the list of participating venues to see if there is one near you.
