Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock portraits (May 22, 2012)
Photos of Benedict Cumberbatch at the Sherlock photocall.
It’s the BAFTAs on Sunday! So I thought a quick post with some pointers (and shiny pics) was in order.
Red Carpet
Benedict has been confirmed as attending which means that if you want photos/autographs then really the best chance of obtaining them is to watch the red carpet arrivals on the day. Access to the red carpet is by wristband only. Wristbands are given out from the public queuing area on the Festival Terrace from 8am on Sunday 27 May. People will obviously queue before then so it is an early start if you want a decent spot. Bear in mind Benedict hasn’t been in the country for the best part of 5 months so I am anticipating he will spend a lot of time chatting to the press. Apart from Benedict others representing Team Sherlock and confirmed to be attending on the night are Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue, Andrew Scott and Lara Pulver. I am sure Mark Gatiss will also be there. Sadly Martin is filming The Hobbit and so can’t attend but his partner Amanda Abbington will be there.
Attending the Ceremony
If you’ve got a ticket for the ceremony have an amazing time walking the red white and blue carpet!
The red carpet opens at 4:30 p.m. and they want everyone to have arrived by 5:30 p.m. with the ceremony starting at 6:45 p.m. Put your glad rags on, celeb spot and rub shoulders with the shiny celebs around you at the (sadly) cash bar. Oh and dress light - there’s going to 1500 people arriving and cramming into that foyer apparently! I think there is a fair Sherlock contingent in attendance. Do say hi if you spot me amongst the throngs of people.
Coverage on the Night
I will do my best to take some pics of the crowds & the like in the build up on the night (although I wouldn’t expect any posed pics of the celebs - I think you’ll get turfed out for that!).
The BBC in its infinite wisdom is once again not screening the BAFTAs live. The ceremony starts at 6:45 - the tv coverage starts at 8:00 p.m. on BBC 1. This means that if you want to watch the TV coverage and not be spoiled do stay off twitter (and tumblr!) as twitter will announce all the results first on the night. I won’t be live tweeting as such but will tweet the Sherlock categories as they come up.
Benedict and Andrew Scott are the favourites to win in their categories but then Benedict was heavily favoured to win last year so who knows? Award shows do often award people for their body of work & this is Benedict’s 4th nomination but Dominic West is a serious competitor. It’s widely feared that Celeb Juice will do a TOWIE and whaltz off with the Audience Vote Award which would be a travesty. If (god forbid) the evening doesn’t go as we all hope let’s try, as hard as it may be, to react in a way which would do Team Sherlock proud.
BAFTA aren’t streaming the event so the only place you can see the awards is on BBC1 but they will be posting video highlights to their website during the course of the evening.
Whether you’re doing the red carpet, attending or watching at home have a fab time and good luck Team Sherlock!

I’m getting lots of queries about the BAFTAs by email so thought it was worth a quick post.
The BAFTAs are taking place on 27 May 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Southbank Centre near Waterloo. Today some extra audience tickets (and good ones too) became available in the balcony. You can buy them here: http://ticketing.southbankcentre.co.uk/find/hayward-gallery-and-visual-arts/tickets/the-arqiva-british-academy-television-awards-65123 (But be quick!)
The event was previously sold out and people are asking whether it would be best to book tickets to the event or wait on the red carpet if they want to see Benedict.
Noone knows for definite that Benedict will be at the ceremony although he indicated to a few people at the PBS Sherlock Event that he was hoping to be there.
I think if your ultimate aim is to come away from the event with Benedict’s autograph & maybe a photo then I would bypass the event and wait on the red carpet instead. At events like this you have to trade off between being at the event or getting autographs.
Access to the red carpet is by wristband only and these are given out from the public queuing area on Festival Terrace from 8:00 am on the day of the ceremony. Obviously people will queue before 8:00 am so if you fancy watching the celebs arrive do get there early. You’ll then be let into the public viewing areas from 2:00 pm.
I’ve lost the sheet which came with my tickets but it was a list of guidelines for attending the event itself one of which I’m sure was don’t approach the guests for autographs. Its not like the PBS event Benedict isn’t going to be expecting an autograph queue of delightful fans wanting his signature. At the Oliviers that I attended recently people were quite happy to exchange a word or two with you while they were on their way in (I spoke to Jonny Lee Miller, Zach Braff & Summer Strallen ) but Noone was asking for autographs & I think people would have been taken aback if you did. Obviously you have to play these things by ear but I don’t think anyone should be expecting that they’ll be able to get autographs from the Sherlock cast before the ceremony once they’re inside the venue. That’s what the red carpet is for.
Finally quick warning about the ceremony and twitter. The ceremony is down to start at 5:00 pm. I can’t see that the BBC will air it that early, certainly for the past couple of years it hasn’t been aired live. This means that in all likelihood twitter will have announced ALL the winners & the ceremony be over before it even starts to air. I will probably tweet the results of the Sherlock related categories on the day (if I can). So if you want to be kept in suspense avoid twitter from late afternoon.
Happy #Sherlockpbs day!
To all the lovely people in the US do enjoy the transmission of Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia and afterwards you can check out our review of the episode (non spoilery and spoiler filled).
#Sherlock is getting amazing reviews in the US and an up to date list of reviews has been added to my site.

In the 48 hour period after PBS started to inform the winners my site had the best part of 700 emails. Some people had won & had questions about the event, others were devastated they didn’t have tickets & wanted to vent, some angrily wanted me to find tickets for them but the vast majority simply wanted to know where the event was being held. Because if you’re in the area & you know the event is on of course you’d go down & wait outside if you had the time to spare in the hope that Benedict would stop and sign autographs/pose for photos on the way in or out. He’s really a very big star now, public appearances are getting rarer & appearances in the US are v rare indeed. So it’s totally understandable people would want to wait. But crowds of people waiting outside can quickly become a security nightmare. The BFI premiere in London had an atmosphere which was, frankly, a teeny bit hysterical & I’m sure they have that at the back of their minds. So I imagine that in order to avoid the hassle of having to get Benedict through a scrum of (no doubt lovely & well meaning) fans when going to & from the venue (which would be a bit overwhelming for him) they’ve just decided to try & keep the venue details quiet for security reasons. I can understand that.
